Speaking Across the Generations

This half-hour documentary shows the deep bonding that can occur when the very young and the elderly are able to reach out to each other across time.

The underlying message of this documentary is that people can share their loves and hopes and fears in a beautiful, healing way through the use of SOULSPEAK, a modern adaptation of an ancient form of oral poetry. In Spirit of Life, SOULSPEAK was used to bridge the gap between the generations, a gap that often leaves both young and old emotionally isolated. It shows us that if we simply allow ourselves to speak from our deepest and most human level, all walls crumble.

The documentary covers a period of days at Senior Friendship Center. It features members of the Center and young girls from Girls Inc. The documentary opens with the girls learning SOULSPEAK. Later, they teach it to a group of elderly women they had never met before. It concludes with the girls and the women doing SOULSPEAK together. It is warm, funny, profound and beautiful.

We offer a 3-hour video series on Therapeutic SOULSPEAK, a proven program for at-risk children (grades 4 - 12). SOULSPEAK/Sarasota Poetry Theatre developed the video.It can be used as a basic instructional series or as a detailed introduction to SOULSPEAK. SOULSPEAK uses ancient forms of oral/musical poetry that tap into the unconscious and allow at-risk children to express their deepest fears, conflicts and desires without shame, trauma or embarrassment. Although intended for teachers and parents, we have found that general audiences, including children, like this series as well.

The series was developed in conjunction with the School Board of Sarasota County and is designed to instruct teachers, counselors and therapists in the SOULSPEAK process. It has also been shown repeatedly on Sarasota’s countywide educational network to a general audience with excellent response. Over 2,500 at-risk children have participated in SOULSPEAK programs since 1995.

The SOULSPEAK instructional series was initially created to instruct teachers and therapists and parents in the SOULSPEAK process, but we found that the general viewing reported it taught them a way of expressing their emotions they never knew existed.
