ABOUT US:
The MANY VOICES of SOULSPEAK

We are poets, musicians and artists
associated with a non-profit organization called SOULSPEAK, which was founded
by poet/artist Justin Spring in 1992. All of the members of SOULSPEAK believe that the spontaneous,
communal speaking of poetry, the poetry of tribal, pre-literate man is
an instinctive human act that can be learned, or more to the point, re-awakened
in anyone who is willing to surrender to it. We call our contemporary, highly
musical adaptation of that poetry SOULSPEAK. It is a primal, largely unconscious
poetry that is close to prayer in its primal beauty and felt truth.
The core members of MANY VOICES are Justin Spring and Scylla Liscombe. Click here to view Associate
Members. Our recordings, which we make under the name, MANY
VOICES of SOULSPEAK, combine spontaneous oral poetry, singing and music
in a multi-voiced stream very similar to what poetry sounded like when we
lived in tribal states, long before the human race learned to read and write.
This musical, antiphonal poetry is the original form of prayer. What you will
hear on our audio and video recordings, however, is not a 40,000 year-old
sound, but an eclectic contemporary sound based on the very same ancient principles
of spontaneous composition. Nothing is rehearsed, planned or edited. What
you hear is what took place at that moment. We call these highly spiritual,
spontaneous communal poems, speakings.
